Regional inequality and economic development in Spain, 1860–2010

2016

Abstract Fifty years ago Jeffrey G. Williamson suggested that during the process of economic development regional income differences trace out an inverted U-shaped pattern. Since then several studies have tested this hypothesis. Yet, most of these only explore particular stages of development. This study, however, investigates the long-term evolution of regional income inequality. Using a novel dataset spanning 150 years, we describe per-capita GDP disparities across Spanish provinces (NUTS3) from 1860 to 2010. Moreover, to gain a deeper understanding of regional inequality, we examine other relevant dimensions: modality, mobility and spatial clustering. Overall, the findings confirm the ex…

Spatial Patterns of Regional Income Inequality Then and Now

2018

In this chapter an important element characteristic of territorial inequality is examined: the presence of geographical patterns, that is, the grouping of neighbouring regions into clusters of wealth or poverty. The descriptive evidence provided by the maps is supplemented with spatial autocorrelation statistics to test for the presence of spatial clustering. The analysis aims to identify when exactly the geographical patterns that characterize regional inequality in Spain today took shape. Then some hypotheses as to the causes are established. Finally, the chapter analyses whether the clusters of poor or rich regions continue uninterrupted beyond national borders to include regions of Port…

A mesoscopic approach to point-defect clustering in solids during irradiation

1993

Accumulation of point defects in solids during irradiation is often accompanied by self-organization processes which lead to point-defect clustering and thus to the formation of a spatially inhomogeneous defect structure. Within the framework of a mesoscopic phenomenological approach, the conditions for clustering of mobile point defects caused by their elastic interactions are studied. It is shown that differences between the elastic interaction of similar and that of dissimilar defects may lead to such clustering. Further, it is shown that the presence of impurities acting as traps for interstitials may promote the clustering process. The conditions for spatial clustering are studied for …

ASSESSING NEIGHBORHOOD DISORDER: VALIDATION OF A THREE-FACTOR OBSERVATIONAL SCALE

2015

AbstractThis study presents data on the development and preliminary validation of an observational scale assessing neighborhood disorder. Independent observations by trained raters of neighborhood disorder were conducted in 552 census block groups in the city of Valencia (Spain). Intraclass correlation coefficients assessing inter-rater reliability indicated fair to substantial levels of agreement among raters. Confirmatory factor analyses supported a final three-factor model scale measuring physical disorder, social disorder, and physical decay. Results for the internal consistency showed large composite reliability indices indicating good reliability for all neighborhood disorder factors.…

Detection of spatial disease clusters with LISA functions.

2011

Detection of disease clusters is an important tool in epidemiology that can help to identify risk factors associated with the disease and in understanding its etiology. In this article we propose a method for the detection of spatial clusters where the locations of a set of cases and a set of controls are available. The method is based on local indicators of spatial association functions (LISA functions), particularly on the development of a local version of the product density, which is a second-order characteristic of spatial point processes. The behavior of the method is evaluated and compared with Kulldorff's spatial scan statistic by means of a simulation study. It is shown that the LI…

The Diversification of Sicilian Farms: A Way to Sustainable Rural Development

2021

Rural areas still suffer from a lack of sustainable development, and the diversification of farms may be a step in the right direction. The paper provides a detailed picture of the diversification of Sicilian farms into tourism services. Specifically, we propose a simple indicator of localization intensity of agritourism farms and explore their spatial distribution at municipality level. Our study highlights that Sicilian farms rarely diversify into tourism services, despite being situated in attractive areas. That said, some significant spatial clusters of municipalities where agritourism farms are highly concentrated do emerge from the study.

Detecting clusters in spatially correlated waveforms

2017

Seismic networks often record signals characterized by similar shapes that provide important information according to their geographic positions. We propose an approach to identify homogeneous clusters of seismic waves, combining analysis of waveforms with metadata and spectrogram information. In waveforms clustering, cross-correlation measures between signals may presents some limitations, so we refer to more recent contributes relating data-depth based clustering analysis. The mechanism for alignment is also an important topic of the analysis: warping (or aligning) procedures identify nuisance effects in phase variation, that, if ignored, may result in a possible loss of information and t…

Spatio-temporal Dynamical Analysis of Brain Activity during Mental Fatigue Process

2021

Mental fatigue is a common phenomenon with implicit and multidimensional properties. It brings dynamic changes of functional brain networks. However, the challenging problem of false positives appears when the connectivity is estimated by Electroencephalography (EEG). In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on spatial clustering to explore the sources of mental fatigue and functional activity changes caused by them. To suppress the false positive observations, spatial clustering is implemented in brain networks. The nodes extracted by spatial clustering are registered back to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) source space to determined the sources of mental fatigue. The…
